I don’t know about you, but Tiger Wood’s victory yesterday was absolutely amazing! You see, I’ve always been one that rooted for Tiger! I’d like to think I am more than a fickle fan! Lol! When he would play in a tournament in the past 11 years, I would want him to win and win big! I am not a golfer (although I’m happily married to one), but I am one to celebrate the greatness inside a person! He was/is a great golfer! He was someone you didn’t mind cheering for!
When the whole “stuff” went down in his life (and it did go downhill quickly), I was devastated. Devastated for his family, his wife, his children, his “team” and all those who supported him! I couldn’t imagine that he made some of the choices he made. I just didn’t understand.
Some of my thoughts included these:
His wife was beautiful and their marriage seemed like a match made in heaven, so why did he seek pleasure elsewhere?
His children were so young and we all know children are blessings, so why would he make such crazy decisions that would jeopardize their future?
His “team” of people around him counted on him, so why would he do anything that could affect their income?
He seemed to have it all, so why was that “all” not enough?
So many unanswered questions and truthfully, none of us supporters were entitled to those answers, although I admit, that would have been nice. I felt invested and then the rug was ripped out from underneath me! I can only imagine how his family felt. The level of betrayal, hurt, pain and anger I am sure were indescribable.
It’s been 11 years. 11 long years. 11 years we’ve watched and we’ve waited. I am sure if he could tell the story he would say that the road he’s walked these past 11 years hasn’t been easy. I’m guessing he’s had to face some incredibly hard truths, deal with losses he hadn’t factored into the equation and it’s probably been one long emotional roller coaster ride he didn’t think would end.
But yesterday, oh yesterday, that roller coaster ride took a crazy turn and man, it was an awesome thing to watch!
We celebrated his win publicly, although I believe his wins privately starting happening a long time ago!
I am an imaginative person, so my mind goes to these thoughts! Did he ever think this day would truly come? Oh, I know he practiced, he played, he entered tournaments, he had rounds of golf that were horrible, he missed cuts in several tournaments, he dealt with injuries etc., but did he ever wonder will I WIN again? I have to think he had those thoughts running through his mind daily for a really long time!
I think so many of us can relate to Tiger Woods.
We’ve all made crazy choices, crazy decisions and ended up in some places we didn’t think we’d land!
It’s in those moments we question. We wonder. We cry. We scream.
We think thoughts like if only I could get one more shot. If I could have just one more chance, I’ll do it different, I promise!
I think Tiger Woods truly believed that it would happen again. I think he knew he would have that moment! It wasn’t a question of if, it was a question of when!
You see, you don’t go out and play in a tournament with a mindset I’m going to lose. What would even be the point of picking up a club in a tournmanet if you thought there wasn’t a chance of you winning? I think his mindset was always this is my one more moment, this is my one more shot, this is my one more chance situation! I can do this! I’ll turn this around and someday soon, somebody is going to see my comeback!
Your mindset matters! You have to believe in yourself! You have to forgive yourself! You have to change your habits, make better decisions, do things differently to have a different result.
Tiger believed in himself! When most people didn’t, he did! He believed that one day he was going to prove to the world that no one should count him out! And yesterday was that day!
Maybe you’ve been thinking it’s all over. I’ve messed up so badly and boy, what I wouldn’t give for a comeback!
Well, you can have a comeback! It’s not over for you! The devil might want you to think it is, but it isn’t! You’re just one decision away, one moment away, one chance away from things going in a different direction! Read these lyrics from The Comeback by Danny Gokey:
After the heartache of wrong turns and sidetracks
Just when they think they’ve got you game set match
Here comes the comeback
Don’t mean you blacked out or bought out you’re ready
Just when they think there’s nothing left running on empty
Here comes the comeback
The fire the fight your golden
You’ve come so far keep going
Oh here comes the comeback
Under the roar of the heaven the tide breaks
And from the ashes you will take your place
Here comes the comeback
There is no giant you can’t take
All of your tears were not a waste
Your one step away
